Amazon Launches First Kuiper Satellites to Rival Starlink

  • Amazon has launched 1st 27 satellites for its Project Kuiper, aiming to offer global broadband internet & compete with SpaceX’s Starlink.
  • The Kuiper network is part of a $10 billion initiative to deploy 3,236 satellites in low-Earth orbit by 2026, with a focus on rural areas.
  • The project has faced delays, but Amazon expects to begin service later this year after confirming satellite contact.

Similipal designated Odisha’s second national park, after Bhitarkanika

  • The Odisha government notified the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR), the world’s only home to wild melanistic tigers, as a national park.
  • Similipal is the 107th national park and the second in the eastern state, after the Bhitarkanika.
  • Proposed in 1980, the intention to declare Similipal as a National Park remained pending for over four decades.

Former national shooting coach Prof Sunny Thomas passes away at 83

  • Former national shooting coach and Dronacharya awardee Prof. Sunny Thomas, who played a pivotal role in transforming the country into a shooting powerhouse, passed away at Uzhavoor in Kottayam district.
  • He was 83.
  • Prof. Thomas, who dedicated himself to full-time coaching after retiring as an English Professor, served as India’s national shooting coach from 1993 to 2012.

Tiexian Reef: US Deploys Anti-Ship Missiles in Philippines

  • The US has deployed anti-ship missile launchers on Batan Island, Philippines, near Taiwan.
  • The deployment comes after China conducted large-scale exercises around Taiwan, warning against moves toward its independence.
  • The Balikatan military exercises involve 9,000 US troops and forces from the Philippines, Australia, Japan, and others, near the contested South China Sea.

34 Critically Endangered Vultures Shifted from Pinjore to Maharashtra

  • Vulture Conservation & Breeding Centre (VCBC):
  • VCBC, Pinjore was established in 2001 with help from the UK govt.
  • Jointly managed by Haryana Forest deptt and Bombay Natural History Society,
  • Located in Bir Shikargaha WS, Haryana
  • 3 species conserved: White Backed, Slender Billed, Long Billed Vultures.

₹22,864-crore greenfield highway project : Meghalaya and Assam

  • The Cabinet Committee, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on approved a ₹22,864 crore project to build a 166.8 km four-lane greenfield access-controlled highway between Mawlyngkhung in Meghalaya and Panchgram in Assam.
  • The project will be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM).
  • Out of the total stretch, 144.80 km falls in Meghalaya and 22.00 km in Assam.

African Swine Fever Outbreak in Mizoram Kills Over 3,000 Pigs

  • Over 3,000 pigs have died in four districts of Mizoram due to African Swine Fever (ASF) in the last month, with Siaha district being the hardest hit.
  • Nearly 1,000 pigs were culled to prevent the spread, with 46 localities declared ASF-infected zones.
  • Mizoram suffered a Rs 336.49 crore loss in 2024 due to ASF, following significant losses in previous years.

World Veterinary Day : 26 April

  • Every year on the last Saturday of April, people around the world unite to observe World Veterinary Day.
  • This year’s theme is “Animal Health Takes a Team”.
  • Professor John Gamgee of the Veterinary College of Edinburgh initiated the first World Veterinary Congress.
  • In the year 2000, the WVA established World Veterinary Day to raise awareness on veterinary professionals. 

Cricket retained, MMA to debut at Asian Games 2026

  • Cricket has been retained for Asian Games 2026, while Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is set to make its debut at the continental meet.
  • The Asian Games 2026 are scheduled to be held in the Aichi and Nagoya prefectures of Japan from September 19 to October 4.
  • This will be the fourth time that cricket will be making an appearance in the Asian Games programme.

PM Modi Promotes ‘Sachet’ App for Early Disaster Alerts

  • ‘Sachet’ app, launched by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), offers real-time geotagged alerts on natural disasters like floods, cyclones, and earthquakes.
  • It provides weather reports and updates from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), available in 12 Indian languages.
  • PM Modi urged people to download the app for safety and to stay informed during natural disasters.

Caste enumeration to be included in upcoming national census

  • In a major decision, the central government announced that caste enumeration will be included in the upcoming population census.
  • Under Article 246 of the Constitution, the census is listed at Entry 69 of the Union List in the Seventh Schedule, making it exclusively a Union subject.
  • This move will contribute to strengthening the country’s social and economic framework.

Scientists Discover Bacteria That Can Conduct Electricity

  • Scientists have discovered Ca. Electrothrix yaqonensis, a new bacterium capable of conducting electricity, found in Oregon’s mud flats.
  • The bacterium’s nickel-based fibers enable long-distance electron transport, which could lead to applications in bioelectronics and pollutant cleanup.
  • This discovery could provide new insights into bacterial evolution, and sediment chemistry.

‘Ramanujan: Journey of a Great Mathematician’ book launched

  • National Archives of India launched a book titled ‘Ramanujan: Journey of a Great Mathematician’ in New Delhi.
  • The book is a historical account that delves into the life and contributions of Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
  • The book is authored by Arun Singhal and Dr Devendra Kumar Sharma. 

Cabinet approves higher sugarcane FRP for 2025–26 season

  • The Union Cabinet approved the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane for the 2025–26 season at ₹355 per quintal for a basic recovery rate of 10.25 per cent.
  • The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  •  India being the world’s largest producer and consumer of sugar.

International Jazz Day : 30 April

  • In November 2011 the UNESCO General Conference proclaimed 30 April as “International Jazz Day”.
  • This International Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world.
  •  The Global Host for this year’s celebration is the city of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. 

CBI dismantles international online child sexual exploitation network

  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has dismantled the cybercrime networks involving online child sexual exploitation with international linkages.
  • CBI took the action under the operation Hawk, which was launched based on inputs received from the USA.

Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s Comeback as PM of Trinidad and Tobago

  • Kamla Persad-Bissessar, 73, wins Trinidad and Tobago’s election, marking her return as prime minister after serving from 2010-2015.
  • She is the only woman to have ever led the country, vowing to deliver on promises like pension security and job creation.
  • The ruling PNM party conceded defeat, with former PM Keith Rowley acknowledging the loss.
