World Health Day : 7 April
- World Health Day, observed annually on 7 April, highlights pressing global health issues and mobilises action to improve public health outcomes.
- Started by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1950, it unites governments, institutions, and communities in addressing critical health priorities each year.
- 2025 Theme: Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.
India, Sri Lanka Ink Key Deals in Defence, Energy & Trade
- The event featured the signing and exchange of MoUs in several sectors, including defence cooperation, power import and export, digitisation, multi-sectoral grant assistance to Eastern Province, health and medicine, and pharmacopoeia.
- A tripartite agreement along with the UAE for the development of Trincomalee as an energy hub was also signed.
BRICS+
- BRICS is an intergovernmental organization comprising ten countries –Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
- BRIC was originally a term coined by British economist Jim O’Neill and later championed by his employer Goldman Sachs in 2001 to designate the group of emerging markets.
Brazil Proposes Global Climate Council Ahead of COP30
- Brazil has proposed the creation of a new international body to accelerate global climate action.
- The plan is shared ahead of this year’s UN climate conference (Conference of the Parties – COP30) in Belem, a city in northern Brazil, in November 2025.
- The plan suggests forming a “Climate Change Council” under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
PM Narendra Modi launches 2 India-assisted railway projects
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled to Anuradhapura in north-central Sri Lanka and launched two India-assisted railway projects.
- Inaugurated the 128-km Maho-Omanthai railway line refurbished with Indian assistance of $91.27 million.
- Launch of the construction of an advanced signalling system from Maho to Anuradhapura, with Indian grant assistance of $14.89 million.
Agasthyamalai landscape
- The Supreme Court has directed the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) to survey the entire Agasthyamalai landscape to identify non-forestry activities and encroachments.
- The ruling aims to initiate restoration of pristine forest areas and protect tiger habitats and wildlife sanctuaries.
- It is located in the southern Western Ghats in South India, spanning the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border.
Ottawa Convention
- Poland, Finland, and all three Baltic states have announced plans to withdraw from the 1997 Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel landmines, citing growing security threats from Russia.
- It was adopted in 1997 during a diplomatic conference in Oslo.
- It is an international agreement that bans anti-personnel landmines.
- The treaty came into force on March 1, 1999.
India’s Coal Boom: Production Surpasses One Billion Tonnes
- India achieved a historic milestone by surpassing one billion tonnes (BT) of coal production on 20 March 2025, in FY 2024-25—11 days ahead of last year’s 997.83 million tonnes (MT).
- With the fifth-largest coal reserves and as the second-largest consumer, coal remains crucial, contributing 55% to the national energy mix and fuelling over 74% of total power generation.
BRICS+
- The first summit in 2009 featured the founding countries of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, where they adopted the acronym BRIC.
- In September 2010 South Africa joined the organization which was then renamed BRICS, and attended the 3rd BRICS summit in 2011 as a full member.
- Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates attended their first summit as member states in 2024 in Russia.
Rudrankksh strikes gold in 10m air rifle at ISSF World Cup
- Former world champion Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil won the gold medal in the men’s 10m air rifle shooting event at the ISSF World Cup 2025 Buenos Aires.
- This was Rudrankksh Patil’s second individual gold medal at an ISSF World Cup.
- He also clinched the 10-meter air rifle title at the 2023 Cairo edition.
- Patil’s triumph was India’s fourth medal at the first ISSF World Cup of the season.
Agniveers Will Get 20% Reservation In Haryana Police Recruitment
- Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini announced that Agniveers, after completing mandatory four-year service in the Armed Forces, will be given 20% reservation in the recruitment of state police.
- The Haryana Cabinet has already provided security cover to the Agniveers by implementing the Haryana Agniveer Policy-2024.
- Agnipath scheme: Launched by the Centre in June 2022.
African Giant Pouched Rat
- A giant African pouched rat, set a world record by detecting 109 landmines and 15 other unexploded ordnance (UXOs) in Cambodia.
- It made the Guinness World Record for most landmines detected by a rat.
- Scientific name: Cricetomys gambianus, it is a large rodent species native to sub-Saharan Africa.
- Conservation Status: It is classified as “Least Concern” by the IUCN Red List.
Sudarsan Pattnaik Becomes First Indian to Win Fred Darrington Sand Art
- Renowned Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has become the first Indian to receive the prestigious Fred Darrington Sand Master Award for his outstanding contributions to sand art.
- The award was presented during the Sandworld 2025 International Sand Art Festival in Dorset, England.
- Sudarshan Pattnaik, a Padma Shri awardee is from Odisha.
