Former Peru President Ollanta Humala Sentenced to 15 Years Jail
- Peru’s former president, Ollanta Humala, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in a money laundering case.
- A court in the capital, Lima, found him guilty of accepting illegal funds from the Venezuelan government and from a Brazilian construction company to bankroll his election campaigns in 2006 and 2011.
- His wife, Nadine Heredia, was also found guilty.
Five military personnel get MacGregor medals
- Five military personnel were conferred the MacGregor Memorial Medal by CDS Anil Chauhan for outstanding contributions in military reconnaissance, exploration and adventure for 2023 and 2024.

World Hemophilia Day : April 17
- On April 17, 2025, the global bleeding disorders community will come together to celebrate World Hemophilia Day.
- This year’s theme is “Access for all: Women and girls bleed too”.
- The first World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) Congress was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on June 25, 1963.
- The WFH was established in 1963 by Frank Schnabel, a Canadian businessman born with severe hemophilia A.
Studied over 21 years, new species of frog named after Assam college
- Leptobrachium aryatium, a frog new-to-science recorded in the Garbhanga Reserve Forest in the southwestern part of Guwahati bordering Meghalaya, is now wearing the college’s name.
- The frog has been described by four zoologists, associated with Arya Vidyapeeth College either as alumni or faculty members, in the latest issue of the journal Zootaxa.
MacGregor Memorial Medal Award
- Instituted on July 03, 1888, the MacGregor Memorial Medal commemorates Maj Gen Sir Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, founder of the United Service Institution of India established in 1870.
- Originally intended to recognise the acts of military reconnaissance and exploratory journeys, the medal’s scope was expanded in 1986, post-independence, to include military expeditions and adventure activities.
NOIDA: Spl Handloom Expo
- National Handloom Development Corporation, under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, has launched the Special Handloom Expo in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
- The event will bring together handloom weavers from across 13 states and aims at a renewed focus on the age-old tradition of Handloom weaving.
- The expo will provide a platform for weavers to sell their products directly to customers.
IIT-B graduate launches free website of Sanskrit literature
- To bring together Sanskrit literature and reading tools, Antariksh Bothale, a software engineer from Jodhpur in Rajasthan, launched SanskritSahitya.org, a free website for anyone desiring quick access to Sanskrit literary texts, bringing his academic and professional experience in Natural Language Processing into the field of Sanskrit literature.
Chettur Sankaran Nair
- Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair was a nationalist, jurist, and social reformer known for his fierce independence and commitment to justice.
- In 1897, he became the youngest president of the Indian National Congress at the Amaravathi Session.
- By 1908, he was a permanent judge of the Madras High Court.
- He later accused Michael O’Dwyer, the LG of Punjab during the massacre, of enabling the killings.
Type 5 diabetes recognised as distinct form of disease
- At the 75th Diabetes World Congress in Bangkok, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) officially classified Type 5 diabetes as a distinct form of the disease affecting lean, undernourished young adults in low- and middle-income countries.
- Type 5 diabetes primarily affects lean teenagers and young adults with a body-mass index (BMI) below 18.5 kg/m².
S. Africa’s ‘cradle of humankind’ caves reopen
- South Africa’s Sterkfontein caves, where one of our earliest ancestors was found, located 50 km northwest of Johannesburg, the caves closed nearly three years ago due to flooding with a new experience bringing tourists closer to the scientific action.
- The complex is housed within the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, a rich source of artefacts for palaeontologists.
ISSF: Inder Singh Suruchi and Saurabh Chaudhary win mixed Team Gold
- In Shooting, the Indian pair of Inder Singh Suruchi and Saurabh Chaudhary clinched a gold medal beating Chinese duo of Qianxun Yao and Kai Hu by 17-9 in the finals of 10 metre Air Pistol Mixed Team event at ISSF World Cup 2025 in Lima, Peru.

SC wary of denotifiying Waqf-by-user lands
- CJI Khanna, hearing around 100 petitions over the Waqf Act, proposes a three-point interim order to ‘balance equities’; court adjourns hearing without passing any interim order; petitioners questions provision in the 2025 Act which mandated a person to prove he had been a practising Muslim for 5 years before dedicating his property as Waqf.
Indian Navy Hosted 3rd Edition Of Meghayan-25
- The 3rd edition of the Indian Navy’s Meteorological and Oceanological Symposium – Meghayan 25 – was held on 14 Apr 25, to commemorate the formation of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and celebrating WMO Day 2025.
- Hosted at the Nausena Bhawan at Delhi, the symposium was virtually inaugurated by Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff.
