Nobel prize
History of nobal prize
- Nobel Prizes were established in five categories in the year 1895 through the will of Swedish scientist ‘Alfred Nobel’.
- The Nobel Prize, is a group of awards given by the Nobel Foundation in the fields of Chemistry, Literature, Peace, Physics and Physiology or Medicine.
- Prizes in Chemistry, Literature, Peace, Physics and Physiology or Medicine were first awarded from the year 1901.
- From the year 1968, ‘Sveriges Riksbank Prize’ i.e. Nobel Prize in Economics was started in the field of economics.
Alfred Nobel
- Alfred Nobel was a scientist who made about 355 inventions, which also includes the invention of dynamite.
- Before his death in December, 1896, he reserved a large part of his property in a trust.
- He had a strong desire that the interest on this money should be distributed through to those people every year.
- Whose work is most beneficial for the entire human race should be honoured every year.
- The Nobel Foundation awards a prize every year for the best contribution in peace, literature, physics, chemistry, medical science and economics with the interest of this amount deposited in the bank of Sweden.
Nobel Foundation
- The Nobel Foundation was established on June 29, 1900. Where the Nobel Prizes are administered financially.
- The Nobel Foundation is a team of 5 people, whose head is decided by the Council of the King of Sweden.
- The remaining 4 members are decided by the trustees of the award distributing institute. This award is given to the winners by the King of Sweden. Winners are announced annually in October, and the prizes are awarded on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.

Norman Borlaug Field Award

- The Marconi Prize is the Marconi Society’s premier award, presented annually to innovators who have made significant contributions to enhance digital inclusivity through the advancement of information and communications technology.
Ramon Magsaysay Award
- It was established in the year 1957 as the highest honor and major award of Asia.
- The award is presented to individuals who demonstrate extraordinary spirit in service to the people of Asia, regardless of their background.
- The award is presented annually on August 31, which marks the birthday of Ramon Magsaysay, the third President of the Republic of the Philippines, who inspired the establishment of the award.
- Award winners receive a certificate, a medal bearing the embossed image of Ramon Magsaysay and a cash prize.
- This award is considered internationally equivalent to Asia’s Nobel Prize.
- Vinoba Bhave was the first Indian to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award in Community Leadership.

National Sports Awards
- National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and honor excellence in sports.
‘Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna Award:-
‘Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award’ is given for brilliant and outstanding performance in the field of sports by sportsperson over a period of last four years. These awards were instituted in the year 1991-92 as Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awards. In August 2021, the Government of India changed the name of ‘Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award’ to ‘Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award’.
· The first Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award was given to Vishwanathan Anand.
· Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award for the year 2023 has been given to Indian badminton players Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, also known as the ‘Brothers of Destruction’.
‘Arjuna Award’
‘Arjuna Award for outstanding performance in sports’ – given for good performance over a period of last four years and displaying a sense of leadership, sportsmanship and discipline
Arjuna Award was established in the year 1961.
Dronacharya Award
● The ‘Dronacharya Award for Outstanding Coaches in Sports’ is given to coaches for consistently excellent and commendable work in enabling players to excel in international events.
● The first Dronacharya Award was given in the year 1985.
The first Dronacharya Award was given to wrestling coaches Bhalchandra Bhaskar Bhagwat, OM Nambiar and OM Bhardwaj.
The first woman to win the Dronacharya Award was Renu Kohli, who was given this award in the year 2002.
Dhyan Chand Award
● ‘Dhyanchand Award for Lifetime Achievement in Sports and Games’ is given to honor sportspersons who have contributed to sports through their performance and who continue to contribute to the promotion of sporting events even after their retirement.
● These awards were first given in the year 2002.
Abul Kalam Azad Trophy (MAKA)
● The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy is awarded to the overall top performing university in the inter-university tournament.
● It was established in the year 1956-57.

National Film Awards
- National Film Awards is one of the oldest and prestigious awards in the country. These awards are organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India.
- A committee was formed in the year 1949 to start these awards. The job of this committee was to select the best films made on the basis of education and cultural values. In the initial period it was known as State Film Awards.
- National Film Awards started in the year 1954.
Dadasaheb Phalke Award
- This award is considered the highest honor of the Indian film industry. It is given for “outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema”.
- This award was established by the government in the year 1969. The award is named after Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, who presented India’s first film Raja Harishchandra in the year 1913.
- The first Dadasaheb Phalke Award was given to Devika Rani.
Jnanpith Award
● ‘Jnanpith Award’ is the highest award given for Indian literature by the Bharatiya Jnanpith Trust. The award was established in 1961, but first awarded in 1965.
● The first Jnanpith Award was given to G.S. Kurup in the year 1965.
● The first woman to be honored with the Jnanpith Award was a Bengali writer Smt. Ashapurna Devi who was awarded in 1976.
● The 57th Jnanpith Award was given to Konkani language novelist, storyteller and commentator Damodar Maujo.
● This award is given only to Indian citizens.
Sahitya Akademi Award
- Since its inception in 1954, the Sahitya Akademi annually awards the award to the best literary work published in each of the major recognized
languages of India
- As India’s premier literary institution, the Akademi patronizes and promotes literature in the twenty-four Indian languages recognized by itself through awards, fellowships, grants, publications, literary programs and exhibitions.

Gandhi Peace Prize
- Gandhi Peace Prize is an annual award instituted by the Government of India. This award was established in 1995 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, as a tribute to his ideals.
- The award carries a sum of Rs 1 crore, a citation, a plaque and an outstanding traditional handicraft/handloom masterpiece.
- Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2021 is being awarded to Geeta Press, Gorakhpur.
Saraswati Samman
● Saraswati Samman is a literary award given to writers of languages included in the Eighth Schedule for their literary works published in the last 10 years.
● Saraswati Samman was started in the year 1991 by K.K. Birla Foundation.
● The first Saraswati Samman was given to Harivansh Rai Bachchan in the year 1991.
● This award carries Rs 15 lakh and a memento.
● The 32nd Saraswati Samman-2022 has been given to Tamil writer Sivasankari for her book “Surya Vamsam”.
Vyas Samman
● This award was given in the year 1991 by K.K. Birla Foundation.
● This honor is given every year for an outstanding work of Hindi literature by an Indian citizen published in the last 10 years.
● This award carries an amount of Rs 4 lakh, a citation and a plaque.
● The 33rd Vyas Samman has been given to renowned Hindi writer Pushpa Bharti for her memoir – Yaadein, Yaadein aur Yaadein.
Bharat Ratna
● Bharat Ratna is the country’s highest civilian award. It is awarded in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest level in any field of human endeavour. It is considered at a different level from the Padma Award.
● Recommendations for Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister to the President of India. No formal recommendation is required for Bharat Ratna.
● The number of Bharat Ratna awards is limited to a maximum of three in a particular year.
● Till now 48 persons have been awarded the Bharat Ratna Award.
● This award was started in the year 1954.
● Bharat Ratna is also awarded to foreign nationals. Out of 48 Bharat Ratnas awarded so far, it has been awarded twice to foreign individuals, including Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan of Pakistan (1987) and Nelson Mandela of South Africa (1990).
Padma Award
● Padma Awards were started in the year 1954.
● These awards are given in three categories i.e. Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
● Padma Shri is awarded for distinguished service, Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order and Padma Vibhushan for exceptional and distinguished services.
● These awards are given for special and extraordinary achievements and services in all types of activities like arts, literature and education, sports, medicine, social work, science and engineering, public affairs, civil service, trade and industry etc. Are.
● These awards were not announced during the years 1978, 1979 and 1993 to 1997.

Gallantry award
The initial three gallantry awards – Param Vir Chakra, Mahavir Chakra and Vir Chakra – were instituted by the Government of India on January 26, 1950, which were considered effective from August 15, 1947.
After this, in the year 1952, other three gallantry awards – ‘Ashoka Chakra Class-I’, ‘Ashoka Chakra Class-II’ and ‘Ashoka Chakra Class-III’ were instituted, which were considered effective from August 15, 1947.
In January 1967, the names of these awards were changed to Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra and Shaurya Chakra respectively.
The order of precedence of these awards is- Param Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, Kirti Chakra, Veer Chakra and Shaurya Chakra.
● Paramvir Chakra – Paramvir Chakra is the country’s highest military decoration. This honor is given for showing indomitable courage and ultimate bravery in the battlefield. This award is given equally to the heroes of all three armies.
● Mahavir Chakra – Mahavir Chakra is a medal for bravery during war. This honor is given to soldiers and civilians for extraordinary bravery and courage. After Param Vir Chakra, this is the second class gallantry award.
● eer Chakra – This is also a medal for bravery during war. This honor is given to soldiers for extraordinary bravery or sacrifice. This award has immense importance in the Indian Army.
● Ashok Chakra – This is a bravery award given during peace time. This honor is given to soldiers and non-servicemen for extraordinary gallantry or conspicuous bravery or sacrifice. This honor was established in 1952.
● Kirti Chakra – This is a gallantry medal given in peace time. This honor is given to soldiers and non-soldiers for extraordinary or conspicuous bravery or sacrifice.
● Shaurya Chakra – This is also a bravery medal given in peace time. This award is given to soldiers and non-soldiers for displaying extraordinary bravery and indomitable courage.
