Brazil World Cup Winner Jair da Costa Dies at 84

  • Jair da Costa, a member of Brazil’s 1962 FIFA World Cup-winning squad, passed away at 84. He was known for his career at Inter Milan, where he won four Serie A titles, two European Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups.
  • A standout figure in the early 1960s, he made history with the Brazilian national team and also played for clubs like Roma and Santos.

April 29 marks the birth anniversary of Raja Ravi Varma

  • Born on April 29, 1848, in Kerala into an aristocratic family, Raja Ravi Varma revolutionized Indian art by blending Indian themes with European techniques, particularly oil painting, introduced to India by the British.
  • He was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, making him the first Indian artist to receive this honor.

Waves of India displays five distinctive musical styles

  • A special album titled Waves of India is set to be launched on 1st May, the first day of WAVES 2025, the inaugural World Audio Visual Entertainment Summit to be held in Mumbai.
  • The album will feature a total of five songs.
  • The track titled Connecting Creators, Connecting Countries has been composed by Oscar-winning composer M. M. Keeravaani.

11th BRICS Labour & Employment Ministers’ Meeting Adopts Declaration

  • The BRICS Labour & Employment Ministers’ Meeting, held under Brazil’s Presidency, adopted a declaration focused on AI’s impact on the future of work and the effects of climate change on employment.
  • India emphasized its human-centric approach to AI, showcasing initiatives like FutureSkills Prime and Namo Drone Didi for rural women and youth empowerment.

India strengthens tourism footprint at Arabian Travel Market 2025

  • India marked a significantly enhanced presence at the 32nd edition of Arabian Travel Market (ATM), held from April 28 to May 1 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, organised under the theme ‘Global Travel: Developing Tomorrow’s Tourism Through Enhanced Connectivity’.
  • India’s outbound tourism market is projected to reach a substantial US$ $55 billion by 2034.

ISRO Became Lead of ‘International Charter Space & Major Disasters’

  • ISRO will lead the “International Charter Space and Major Disasters” for six months, starting from April 2025, coordinating global disaster response using space-based assets.
  • The National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC)/ISRO organized the 53rd Charter meeting in Hyderabad, with participation from global space agencies.

  • International Dance Day was created by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute ITI, the main partner for the performing arts of UNESCO.
  • Since its creation in 1982, the International Dance Committee and the International Theatre Institute ITI select an outstanding dance personality to write a message for International Dance Day each year.

Pilgrims from Hyderabad & Lucknow leave for Haj

  • Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju has extended his wishes to all one lakh 22 thousand 518 pilgrims undertaking the sacred Haj journey.
  • The first flights took off with 288 pilgrims from Lucknow and 262 pilgrims from Hyderabad. 

Finance Ministry Includes I4C under PMLA to Combat Cyber Frauds

  • The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has been authorized to share information with the Enforcement Directorate under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to tackle cyber fraud.
  • The collaboration will help trace money trails behind transnational cybercrimes using fake websites and deceptive online methods.

Liverpool Clinches 2024–25 Premier League Title

  • Liverpool won their 20th English league title with a 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, securing the Premier League title with four games left.
  • Mohamed Salah shines with 28 goals and 18 assists, while new manager Arne Slot guides Liverpool to the top in his first season.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi becomes youngest centurion in IPL history

  • Suryavanshi’s 101-run innings saw him surpass Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant and Devdutt Padikkal to shatter the record of the youngest centurion in tournament history as he did it at the age of 14 years 32 days.
  • It is also the second fastest century in the tournament, behind only Chris Gayle, who did it in 30 deliveries, and the fastest century by an Indian.

Delhi Launches Free Rs 10 Lakh Health Cover for Senior Citizens

  • Delhi government launched the Ayushman Vay Vandana scheme, offering free health treatment worth up to Rs 10 lakh for citizens aged 70 and above.
  • The scheme includes Rs 5 lakh annually for medical treatment and an additional Rs 5 lakh under Delhi’s own coverage, totaling Rs 10 lakh in health benefits.

India signs deal with France to procure 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets

  • India signed a defence deal with France to procure 26 Rafale Marine fighter aircraft.
  • The Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) was signed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of Armed Forces of France Sebastien Lecornu in New Delhi.
  • Out of 26 Rafale Marine aircraft, 22 will be single-seater and four double-seater. 
  • The delivery of these aircraft would be completed by 2030. 

Mark Carney wins Canada’s PM elections

  • The former Bank of England boss, Mark Carney, has won Canada’s election to become the country’s next prime minister.
  • Carney was the first non-British person to take on the top banking role in the central bank’s more than 300-year history.
  • He had previously steered his home country through the 2008 financial crash as the governor of the Bank of Canada.

Veteran filmmaker Shaji N Karun passes away at 73

  • Eminent Malayalam filmmaker and cinematographer Shaji N Karun passed away in Thiruvananthapuram.
  • He was 73 and was battling health issues.
  • Karun’s films have won seven national awards and as many Kerala State Awards.
  • He was honoured with the J C Daniel Award for lifetime contribution to Malayalam cinema, the highest film honour instituted by the state government.
